The Alien — Crane Fly Larva Close-up

Description

An extreme macro view of the rarely seen rear end of a crane fly larva (Tipulidae). These bizarre, face-like structures are actually its breathing organs — adapted to life in moist, decomposing environments. I was extremely lucky to get this shot. A true conversation piece for both science enthusiasts and abstract art lovers.
